Trying to find a Gunner in the Royal Artillery 1860s
« on: Saturday 23 January 21 10:01 GMT (UK) »
I am researching a distant ancestor, Charles Meecham (several variations on this name), who was a Gunner in the Royal Artillery. Service number 872, 10th Brigade. I think he was in Montreal in 1851 and in 1861 he was in Southsea Castle with his wife, Elizabeth Crann. In 1864 they baptised a child - John Meecham - in Athlone, Ireland, where I have discovered there was a barracks which would explain why they were there. After this I can find no more records, either of Charles or his son but his wife moved to Leeds shortly afterwards and had a family with someone else! She still called herself Meecham so I am presuming that Charles was still alive! I can't find a conclusive death for him although there is a possible death for John in 1865 in Liverpool.
I wondered if anyone could find out where the regiment went after Ireland so I can hopefully find out what happened?
Thank you for looking.
Erica.
