Bennett Isherwood
« on: Saturday 23 January 21 14:57 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for any information as I seem to have hit a brick wall.

Bennett Ishwerwood born 1834 in Edgeworth, Lancs to parents John Isherwood (Abt 1811) and Jane ?? (Abt 1811). Siblings Squire (1830), Hannah (1832) and James (1836).

Bennett 'married' (cannot find any evidence of marriage as yet) Catherine Donovan born 1838 in Cork, Ireland to parents Timothy Donovan (Abt 1801) and Ellen McCarthy (Abt 1801). Sibling Thady/Timothy (1830).

Bennett (and brother Squire) were in prison in Lancashire in 1848, he then goes missing till 1863 where he reappears in Shoreditch, London at the birth of his first child.

Census records tell me Catherine Donovan was born in Brighton but i have found her birth record in Cork, she is in Brighton aged 3 however. She is in Brighton in 1851 then goes missing until 1863 obviously also in Shoreditch for the birth of her first child. They have 6 children, Ellen (1863), Bennett (1865), James (1866), John (1869), Catherine (1872) and Jane (1876).

I'd like to try and find some record of those missing years but keep hitting a blank. (I have researched the children quite extensively so do not need any information for them).

Both Bennett and Catherine stay in London until their deaths.

I'd also like to find more information about both sets of parents but keep hitting blanks here too.  ???

Many thanks

Just out of interest did you find birth registrations for all the children?

Also blank for the missing years at present  :-\

Have you checked out this marriage in Jun 1860 St George Southwark

Mary Ann Benson
Catherine Donovan
John Hussey

As we can see unfortunately one of the grooms is missing.  If Mary Ann and John married each other then Bennett could be the missing groom.

I only found birth records for Catherine 1872 and Jane Isherwood 1876. The older siblings I haven't managed to find. I have got their information from paperwork I have in my possession and census records etc.

I found birth records on an Irish Genealogy site for Catherine Donovan and her brother.

Catherine Donovan
John Hussey

As we can see unfortunately one of the grooms is missing.  If Mary Ann and John married each other then Bennett could be the missing groom.

I'll look more into that. Thank you.

The one thing that intrigues me most is who is Jane, the mother. I cannot pinpoint a maiden name for her.

You presumably have his conviction, along with brother Squire, and in 1833 and 1848?
And presumably you also have the 1871 census in Westminster, where he is listed with his wife and four eldest children, working as an hawker? The birthplaces you quote are the same, but as often happened, "Isherwood" has become "Sherwood" (it's happened with my ones, too!)
You have his parents down as John and Jane. There's a Bennett Isherwood b 31st Jan 1832 at Edgworth, baptised at the chapel in March 1833 with parents given as Jas (James?) and Betty (Elizabeth) Isherwood. Any help?

Yes, I have a number of convictions for the brothers - and a possible one for the dad too. The name has been found as Isherwood and Sherwood at various points. It ends being Esherwood (which it still is today). It doesn't get changed until James, John and Bennett get sent to industrial schools though, and is mainly Isherwood on the older documents.

In 1841 with parents John and Jane, the Isherwoods are in Yorkshire (Squire there too, of course) and he may be a lodger in a lodging house in King Street there, in 1861.

Would you be able to post a photo of this so I can check it against my records.

I have the family located at 'Far Moor, Almondbury' in 1841. Squire is in prison in 1851. I cannot find records for 1861.
