Who is the sitter in this portrait? Pls help decipher handwriting on back
« on: Saturday 23 January 21 16:07 GMT (UK) »
Dear Friends,

I have a, I think regency period, portrait and the sitter (and artist) are unknown. There is, however, writing on the back in pencil denoting who the sitter for the portrait is. If you could please help me decipher the handwriting that would be much appreciated and help solve the mystery!

I love portraits and pick them up at auction sometimes. However, it is sadly often the case that the identity of the sitter is lost. There is such a thrill is helping re-establish these visual remnants of our history.

Please find some images below.

Best wishes,

Joshua

2nd image, sorry they are so small, it appears the site won't take them larger. J

Hi Joshua,

The images are too small to read and when I try to enlarge them, they are simply to blurry to see properly.

The attachments are only about 6kb - I think you are allowed something like 500 here on RC, so maybe it's worth trying to scan the writing again.

Best regards,
Karen

I've enlarged and adjusted the tone, etc. but can't really make anything out.  You really need to provide a large image.

They look to be suffering from jpeg artifacts which suggests that they are over-compressed.

The lighting for the first image is fine. The size (in Kb) of the image will depend on the extent of the area you’re photographing, the resolution you’re photographing at and the degree of compression. So, limit the photograph to the immediate area around the writing, set the image resolution to no more than 300 DPI and adjust the level of compression to give you a file size of no more than 500 Kb.

If you are confused, don’t be afraid to come back and ask!

It's 500kb per image and up to 900kb for multiple images in one post.  That's why many of we restorers have to post variations of large restores in separate posts.
