Elizabeth Cox (1831-1898)- baptismal records
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 00:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
I'm at a bit of a standstill at a 4th great grandmother of mine, Elizabeth Cox (1831-1898). I know that she married George Scanes in 1849 and had six children, the eldest of whom was my 3rd great grandmother, Mary Ann Scanes (1850-1920). I know that she was born in Exeter, and know her maiden name from the GRO records. Moreover, she seems to be consistently conflated by people on ancestry with an Elizabeth Tozer Stile, probably because she married on the same year and in the same parish as Elizabeth Cox and GS. A search of the ancestry baptismal records shows two candidates, one being baptised in 1831 and born in 1830, the daughter of a Thomas and Mary Cox, and baptised in a Presbyterian church. The other is an Elizabeth Ruth Cox, baptised in 1833 and the daughter of Thomas and Ruth. Could I request that someone has a look at this and gives me their opinion, with the hope being that I might find her parents.
Thanks,
Francis

What is the occupation of her father Thomas on the marriage?

Elizabeth Ruth’s father is a Plumber (according to the transcript on FindMyPast)

Did she call any of her children Ruth?

While the other Thomas (husband of Mary) is a Brewer.

There's no certificate, only indexes  :-\
No, she didn't name any of her children 'Ruth'

I can only think you will have to buy the certificate from the GRO
I cannot see it online either.

Only to add....

In 1851 George and Elizabeth Scanes are in Coombe Street. On the next page at number 34 Coombe Street are...

 Mary Cox widow 52 chairwoman
James Cox son un 17 brewer
Thomas Cox son in 12 apprentice to brush maker. Both on 1841 with Elizabeth.

George Scanes is a brush maker in 1851.

 Just possible ?

Wow! That might mean that EC was the daughter of Thomas and Mary. Are the Coxes in 1851 from Exeter? To be honest, I am already thinking that Thomas and Mary are more likely, given that the other record described an Elizabeth Ruth Cox who was the daughter of a Ruth, and one would expect that the name 'Ruth' might show up in one of the daughters, maybe as a middle name.
Thanks
Francis

Hi
Trouble is, many trees seem to have a Mary Jarman, born 1807, marrying a Thomas Cox. 1807 seems to be too late as a DoB, although there's always the possibility that someone just misread 1801 as 1807.
Cheers
Francis

There is a baptism for Mary Ann SCANES dau of George (brush maker) & Elizabeth of Coombe St at St Mary Major Church, Exeter 2 June 1849. As others have said - you'll need to obtain the marriage certificate between George & Elizabeth in 1849 to be certain of Elizabeth's father's name & occupation.
The 1841 census shows also at Powning Court, St Mary Major, Exeter:
Thomas   Cox   Male   40   1801   Devon, England
Mary   Cox   Female   40   1801   Devon, England
Elizabeth   Cox   Female   10   1831   Devon, England
James   Cox   Male   8   1833   Devon, England
Thomas   Cox   Male   2   1839   Devon, England

There is a non-conformist Presbyterian baptism at Exeter, 16 Jan 1831 for an Elizabeth COX born 17 Dec 1830 to Thomas & Mary of St Mary Major. Father a Brewer.
