Information for Alec Moncrieff Robertson
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 11:58 GMT (UK) »
I have a birth certificate for an Elizabeth Ellen Robertson, b1905 in Bury St Edmunds, which states her father's name as Alec Moncrieff Robertson and her mother as Mary Markham. I have also found the family on the 1901 and 1911 census.
Based on family lore, Alec was possibly born in Scotland. The 1911 census gives his birth place as Inverness. But the 1901 gives his birth place as Carlisle. I can't find a result for an Alec/Alexander Moncrieff Robertson in Scotland or England. There are quite a lot of results when I search without the middle name, but I have no other information to verify which could be him  :-[
To make it worse, I cannot find a marriage for Alec and Mary in England or Scotland (the 1911 census says they've been married for 14 years suggesting a date c1897).
Does anyone have any advice for how to start narrowing this down?

What is his approx. YoB from census' & what's his occupation on all?

Quite often a surname as a middle name can point to illegitimacy although not always.

If they have other children can you name all in order as there seems a big gap from marriage 1897? until the birth of Elizabeth in 1905?

How many children are recorded born alive & how many still living on the 1911 census?

He's 40 on 1901 and 50 on 1911. Occupation is Machine Painter. When I looked up the births of the other children they all have Moncrieff as a middle name as well. My assumption was that it would be his mother's MS.

Have you found him pre 1901 in the area?

I'd edited my last post.

Names of children can often help with parents names if they used the naming pattern.

The 1911 has 5 born, 5 living:

Jessie age 13
Alec age 11
Ada age 9
Alan age 7
Elizabeth age 5

All born Bury St Edmunds, so dating them to the area since c1898.

I haven't found anything else.

Can you pick out any of those names from the maternal line?

Normally although not always used...

1st son after paternal g/father
2nd son after maternal g/father
1st dau after maternal g/mother
2nd dau after paternal g/mother

Annie

Edit...Does he use his full title on census or just Alexander/Alec/Alex?

I notice he has complied with the requirement in Col 14 of the 1911 Census to include "Resident" (x'd out by Enumerator) as part of PoB if not born England/Wales. Perhaps strengthens Inverness/Scotland as PoB?

Shd. have included that he is exempted from complying with this requirement as he falls within Qu (1).

List of Inverness-shire births 1858 - 1862 although he seems consistent with a birth year of 1860/61
