Risdaff/Rosdaff/Russdaff in Shrule Civil Parish
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 12:41 GMT (UK) »
Eight baptism records from 1832 in Shrule RC parish show the address as Risdaff, Rossdaff or Russdaff.  None of those is the name of a townland.
Are there any suggestions as to which townland the parents may have lived in?

There was a townland in 1825 called Roslaff(spelled by the British).

I tried to track one family from Roslaff in 1825 to the 1860s in Griffiths and they all moved to the townland of Moyne.

You can do a search in the Parish in the 1860s for place names.

Perhaps it is one of the islands listed as,  " Islands in lough corrib. "

If you look at the Townland transcript, it looks more like ‘Rostaff’ - compare the letter to the ‘l’ in Ruanlaughter above it.

It is still mentioned in recent records - scroll down to remembrances of the dead

Looking at a couple of those deaths here https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ gives Rosstaff or similar but then census entries seem to be Moyne.

There is some history here with mention of Rosstaff

The Friary of Ross mention of Rostaff and there may be more.

Thank you, patrick_a and Heywood, for your replies.
I have found the families on censuses in Moyne which seems to have been the official name of the townland since at least the time of Griffiths Valuation.  I have a 1939 death certificate showing the place of death as Rostaff.  No doubt the locals still call the place that.
