Assistance Please: Dating Bannister & Co - Newcastle - Photo 016
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 14:43 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

This is my first time posting on the forum so please bear with me. I have a couple of photos that I am currently struggling to date. They are from Bannister & Co, Newcastle-On-Tyne at 6 Ridley Place. Does anyone happen to have any information on Bannister & Co, and when they were at 6 Ridley Place? I've added the photos to this post for information including the back. Thanks in advance for your help!

They both look 1860s and the back is a late 1860s design, according to my refs.

Looking at press advertising Bannister & Co advertised from 6 Ridley Place during 1866 and 1867 but the card design looks later

Agree with Gadget definitely late 1860's.
You can see from her crinoline that the upper hoops have disappeared
& just the lower 3 remain. This was the norm for younger women late decade.
I also venture she may be with child.

Advertisements in the Newcastle Journal show Bannister at 6 Ridley Place in November 1867, then at 'spendid new premises, 1 Derwent Place' in January 1868.

That ties in with the link that I gave in reply #2 , Matthew  :)

I'm sure there was an art supplies shop there in the late 1960s/early 1970s. I recall buying quite a lot of oil paint from there  ;D

add - no it was on the opposite side of the road

Hi and welcome to RootsChat, I agree with the dates offered. They are lovely photos in good condition too for their age.

Hello all.

Many thanks for your quick and amazing responses.

Late 1860s may confirm my suspicions of who it could be. The photos are from a family album primarily consisting of my great and great great grandparents. These photos appeared slightly older in my opinion than the others. In late 1860s my great great great grandparents were in their early twenties. They married in Feb 1868 whilst living in St. John's parish, Newcastle. It appears this may be a picture of my great great great grandparents, potentially celebrating their engagement if taken in late 1867? Who knows - I guess I'll never know but I can assume!

Now onto the many more photos in the album which I'm making my way through. I never thought of newspaper advertisements as I had been focusing on directories and googling. If I become stuck again I may post if I've exhausted all my options!

Once again, thanks for your responses. Great forum!
