Jane GRIFFITH(S)
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 14:51 GMT (UK) »
In '71, Jane COOK (nee GRIFFITH(S)) is living in Williton, Somerset with her husband and 6 children; her age is given as 47, b 1824 in Kent

In '61, her age is 37, b 1824 in Chatham, Kent

She married Thomas COOK in 1847 in Williton.

I have failed to find them in '51, and I can find no trace of her baptism ca 1824.

Can anyone help, please?

1851 census :

 HO107; Piece: 1920; Folio: 176; Page: 9

Name is written as COOKE on the census and Jane's birthplace has been transcribed as " Hesse, Chatham " ( this is on Ancestry  ).

The 1847 marriage at Old Cleeve gives her residence as Billbrook and her father as William Griffith , labourer.

This 1841 census looks like it could be Jane and her parents :

William Griffith 50 Ag lab
Bridget Griffith 40
Jane Griffith 15
address Billbrook, Old Cleeve
HO107/965 Book: 7/ Folio: 16 p 3
The census says born Somerset for all three.

There are trees on Ancestry for this family which suggest Jane's parents are William Griffith and Bridget Bouldger. Their marriage took place on the Island of Jersey 21 March 1819 . William was a Private in the 55th Regiment. AS Chatham was a Garrison town the family may have lived there for a time which may account for the birthplace discrepancy - worth investigation , I think.

That's a fantastic amount of information; it's going to take me a while to digest it all.

I'm going out shortly, to eat with my 'bubble' family, so I'll tackle it tomorrow, but I just wanted to say 'thank you' for now.

Bearkat,
Definitely the right family.
How on earth did you manage to find it? The thread had been dormant for years!
Many thanks

I've now managed to find the '51 on 'freecen'. I still can't understand why I couldn't find it on FindMyPast as I left the spelling of COOK as free as I could. Anyway, thanks to your work, I now have it.

You have more details on the 1847 marriage than I've found. May I ask your source, please?

Your report of the '41 looks to be spot-on; I'm going to see if I can replicate it.

Thanks again.

Many thanks. Much more information than I have been able to glean

I assume that:-

the father of Thomas COOK was also named Thomas and that his occupation was 'Groom'
the father of Jane GRIFFITH was William, occupation 'Labourer'

is that correct?
