Seeking Information on Winship Family from Yorkshire
« on: Tuesday 26 January 21 14:34 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to trace my fathers family back to Yorkshire.  I have the following information and hoping somebody may have a relative in their tree or have more information about the family.

William Winship born about 1868 Sutton Yorkshire
1881 - Residence Southcoates Yorkshire Census lists him as son to head Stella Winship Laundress
Siblings - Alice and Laura
1896 - Marries Eliza Eggers in Durban South Africa - Eliza was born in Hull Yorkshire
They had 6 sons: William 1898, Thomas 1901, John 1902, Frank 1903, Albert 1904 (My grandfather) Cecil 1909 Deceased 1913.
Next information I have on him is a death certificate for December 1941.
He left the family and my grandfather never discussed his father at all.  I am now trying to give my father some information about his family as he is 82 and has always had questions that were never answered.
Thank you for any information you may be able to provide

Welcome to Rootschat, Ivy

The 1871 census has William E Winship, born, 1870, Stoneferry, Hull, living with father, John, 30, Mother, Stella, 30 & siblings, Ada, 8 & Ruth A, 5. They are living in Stutton with Hazlewood which is between Leeds & York.

I also have a death in Hull, 1869-1952, of a William E Winship

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2X7L-2K1

William Edward Winship, born 1869. birth registered in Sculcoates, Hull. MMN Collingwood

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVCF-WBV5

Father, John, born 1841 died 1876, death reg in Sculcoates.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2JRB-RBP

John married Stella Moddy Collingwood, 1862, Sculcoates

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2DV7-D3F

Stella was born, 1840, Goole, daughter of John & Hannah Collingwood.

In the 1871 census, she lists born in London & 1881, Yarmouth. Very confusing.

I do not think that the William Winship you have associated with the one in the 1881 census is correct.

William Edward Winship married, 1900, in Sculcoates, & dies 1952.

There were other William Winships born about the same time.

I think we have a choice of 3 for your William, William, born Scarborough, 1869, William born Sculcoates, 1866 or William, born Skirlaugh, 1870

Certainly one of them married in 1893, Hull.

William & Eliza had a son who was born in Sculcoates, 1899, John Joshua after Eliza's father. He died 1966 in Durban

if I'm reading this right we have a William b 1898(UK?) , a John Joshua 1899 mmn Eggers and then a Thomas 1901 South Africa??

Believe the family sailed from Southampton on the 7.7.1900 to the Cape on the Dunvegan Castle.

Mr W winship aged 28 = c1872  occ Dealer  ( a carpenter when he marries)
Mrs E Winship aged 26
Master W        aged 2
Master J          aged 1

Are we possibly looking for alater birth for William snr??

There is a probate for Tamor Matilda Winship, in 1903, naming William as beneficiary

This is the Filey Winships. There father, John,  had died & the mother, Jane, remarried a Charles Bright (1881 census)
