Looking for a Pettit marriage
« on: Friday 29 January 21 14:05 GMT (UK) »
James Henry Pettit's birth was registered Q4 1900 in Medway district mmn Pettit.
I have him on the 1901 census in Chatham with father Harry b abt 1859 Stowmarket, Suffolk occ Boilermaker's labourer Dockyard and mother Sarah b abt b1873 Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
In 1911, the family is joined by a daughter Kate age 9. This looks like it is Kate Elizabeth Pettit reg Q4 1902 Medway district mmn Pettit. Sarah says she has been married 11 years
Also in the household are two brothers James and Frank Pettit, both in their 30s and born Bury St Edmunds. From pob it looks they are more likely Sarah's brothers than Harry's and it looks like Harry Pettit married a Sarah Pettit.
In 1891 Harry is single, a private in the Royal Marines based in Walmer.
Can anyone find Sarah and Harry's marriage please?

No luck with a marriage , I'm afraid. I think Sarah Pettit may be this one :

Sarah Louisa Pettit born 11 Oct 1873 , baptised 8 Feb 1884 Bury St Edmunds St Mary
father George , a painter , and mother Louisa , late Richardson , of 56 Raingate Street.
( above details from Suffolk Baptism Index ).

1891 census

George Pettit 47 head wid painter born Bury St Edmunds
Louisa Pettit 18 daughter
Thomas 14
James 13
Frank 10
Alfred 6
Kate 2
( James & Frank look good for the 2 men in 1911 ).

Thank you very much. That looks like the family, despite her using her middle name, everything else fits.

I've just tracked George Pettit back through censuses and it looks like he's the son of William Pettit and Susanna nee Clarke. And so is Harry Pettit !

Looks like another uncle / niece relationship. Second in my family. That's why there's no marriage
