According to Stuart Harris in his book on the place names of Edinburgh, it was shown as early as 1753 on Roy's map, while being mentioned in the Town Council Minutes of 1718 as a landmark.  From the description, he reckoned that it also included the present day Semple Street.

In 1824, the Minutes described it as "a ridge covered with thorns, long unploughed and untouched."  Sounds distinctly inhospitable!

Harris also speculates whether the name was used for the same feature with the Celtic place-name of Drumdryan and says it was probably of considerable size.  I suppose with 211 inhabitants in 1841, it probably was.  In addition, he wondered if it was old enough to be connected to the Roman road network.
