William Piper & early children
« on: Sunday 31 January 21 02:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
Looking to trace the baptisms of my ggggf William Piper and some of his early children
William married Mary Ann Field in Winchester St Thomas in 1824.
He was born around 1792. He was a private in the 67th Foot when he married.
His first child, also William, was born in Portsmouth a year later.
Subsequent children were Stephen (1827) Eliza (1829) James (1831).
William was still in the regiment throughout this period, when I believe it was stationed in the UK.
All help gratefully received. Sadly can’t access the Hampshire record office just now.

It also mentions that William died in Bristol in 1850, presumably this death

Hello, Rosie,
Thanks for your replies.
Yes, this is William’s family, in 1841. Various records (death certificate, children’s marriage) show his army past and final rank (drill sergeant)
By 1851 he’s added George and Elizabeth (my gggm), although Mary Ann is then a widow.
She was born in Bighton (not Brighton) Hampshire (it’s near Winchester, where they married)
I can find no information on the baptisms of children 2 - 4 though, nor one for William himself, which fits. William and Mary baptised all their other children, so they must be out there somewhere. Hence my question to the forum, as Hants seems most likely
Do you have any information on them?

If William was based in Hampshire when he married Mary he could have been born anywhere. As 1841 gives no clues except not bn Gloucestershire no help either, lots of Pipers in Hampshire / Sussex areas.

Does the marriage give any other information other than he was a Private, have you seen the original entry.
