Magill of Tullycairn and Gillhall
« on: Sunday 31 January 21 15:40 GMT (UK) »
So, I have been researching some American Magill families, many of whom have trees that point to an origin at Tullycairn (Tullycarn townland, Donaghcloney Civil Parish). So, I am trying to research whether there were any Magills that stayed behind at Tullycairn. I did find a record of a Henry Magill, Esq. of Tullycairn who died in 1844. (The property then went to Robert Dickson, then to David Bennett, then James Bennett. James Bennett retired from farming and auctioned the property in 1926.) I am wondering who owned the property before Henry Magill, Esq, and what was his lineage.

Then, I stumble on records of another Co. Down estate called Gillhall that is associated with Magills. It is in Ballysallagh townland, Dromore Civil parish, which happens to be immediately adjacent to Tullycairn. There is a lot more information available about Gillhall. Apparently Captain John Magill obtained the property from the Magennis family in the 1660's. John Magill also owned Tullycairn. The property eventually transfered to the Meade family when Captain John's great granddaughter married the Earl of Clanwilliam. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodosia_Meade,_Countess_of_Clanwilliam

I read that the Earl of Clanwilliam ran into financial problems in the 1780's and started selling some of his properties. Perhaps this is when Tullycairn estate split off from Gillhall.

Does anyone have any information on these properties and Magill families?

I created a couple of pages on Wikitree about these properties.

Gill Hall is in Coolsallagh townland and Tullycarn townland is adjacent to it....both in different civil parishes.

Ballysallagh townland is to the south-east of the town of Dromore.

There are deeds relating to various Magills of Tullycarn throughout the 18th century, right up until Henry Magill’s 1828 marriage to an Elizabeth Shaw of Dublin. Mostly it’s a succession of John Magills. They may be related to the Magills of Gilhall, but they are a separate branch already by this point.

I’m particularly interested in deed 4032 of 1713 when Henry Shaw of Ballygelly Castle appears to sell all his estate to William Magill of Tullycarn. I say ‘appears’ because the Shaws continued to own Ballygelly for another 200 years after that. Henry’s daughter Jane had married a John Magill in 1696.

As these Magills are rich landowners they may not be the emigrants to the US.
