Finding 1950's UK Burial Records
« on: Sunday 31 January 21 15:40 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know where/how to find burial records from the 1950's?

I've just found that my great aunt not only lived just 3 minutes from where I grew up but then moved to where I now live (some 70+ miles away) where she died. I've been trying to find a burial record for her but am just drawing blanks

Have you tried local papers, also she may have been cremated.

Where did she die?  Have you checked the relevant council for any burial records for the 1950s?

There is a website called Deceased Online but unless I know her name and when and where she died I can't check to see if she is on there.

Much as we would like it to be, not everything is online re family history  ::)

Yeah I've checked with the local council as their records are online but drew a blank and nothing on any site like Find A Grave etc. I haven't tried local newspapers yet but I don't hold out much hope of finding anything.

Her name was Ethel May Medland and she died 14/11/1957 in Worthing, West Sussex.

Her husband was Charles George Medland and he died 08/02/1953 in Upper Norwood, London. I did wonder whether she may have been buried with him but Upper Norwood is split between 3 councils, Croydon, Bromley and Penge and none of their records are online.

I guess it's highly likely they were both cremated, are cremation records kept?

To the best of my knowledge they only had one daughter, Audrey Abbott, Medland born 1904 (Abbott was Ethel's maiden name), but other than finding her on the 1911 census, I don't have any other info as only just started researching her.

Charles was cremated on 11 February 1953.  London Borough of Lambeth, West Norwood Crematorium (Lambeth).

I did put Ethel's name in the search box on Deceased Online but nothing came up, only her husband is listed.

The probate record does show her address as Worthing, so in theory there should be some kind of burial/cremation record for Worthing.  The daughter may have chosen to have her mother buried/cremated elsewhere, perhaps where she (Audrey) was living at the time.

1950s it is more likely to be in a  municipal cemetery and they are local council run, some have the burial/cremation records book at the grave yard although also a master copy with the council.

Later 1970s my dad was taken ill and into hospital, transfered to another hospial in another county and died  there so his death is registered in another county he had no connection to, he was returned to the county we lived in and cremated but the crematorium was the opposite side of the city and over the border into another county so nearly 40 miles away from his actual home, so his burial/cremation is recorded in yet another county he had no connection to........... I would suspect this is a possible scenario, so might be worth you checking the map and checking other counties that surround the potental place she lived....it is also worth looking at directories of where  any close relation was living as that may be where there are burial/cremation records
