Lunatic Asylum, Barming Heath, Kent
« on: Monday 01 February 21 16:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have just received a pdf from the GRO stating that my maternal Gt. Grandmother died in the Lunatic Asylum at Barming Heath, Kent in 1887.  I cannot find any record of her on either Ancestry or FindMyPast asylum records.  Can anyone please tell me if the inmate records are available online?  Thank you.  Royd.

Royd - such records are normally held in the local Archives.
(I obtained a copy of my Gt Grandfather's admission records from my local Archives).

I am sure you could probably email them to find out.

Hi Royd -- all I can say is, that it was SUCH a huge shock to me when I obtained my Gt Grandfather's death certificate - I must have stared at the location of death for a while (probably hoping it would change!) He was only 46.

I was so very pleased to find his papers (I actually went to the Archives). I had firstly to find his admission number from an enormous ledger, so I simply went backwards from his date of death, to find him and his number.

Once I had the number - a box in numerical order was presented to me, to locate his papers. I obtained a copy of them all and I was so, so glad that I did.

If the Archives have to find them for you and send the copies - there will be a charge of course. I only had to pay for the copies.

Good Luck with it. It does bring a bit of 'colour' to your family tree!

I can understand your shock as I was shocked too.  My great grandmother died there of gangrene of the lungs......!!!  She was only 40.  Thank you for your advice.  Regards.  Royd.
