Joseph Barton
« on: Monday 01 February 21 16:19 GMT (UK) »
My husband's grandfather Joseph Barton (b. 1888 in Attercliffe, Sheffield) was married to Alice Hawcroft, and in 1911 the census shows them with their oldest son Joseph J (Uncle Jack to us), living in Pitsmoor, Sheffield. Apart from this - and a death reg in 1955 - we haven't managed to track down any documents, I don't know if anyone can break through?

Just to muddy the water there is another Joseph Barton born the same year in Sheffield, who married Annie.

There is a Joseph Barton - but born 21 Oct 1887, with a wife Alice and a daughter Kathleen (who married someone with the surname Vernon) --- on the 1939 Register in Sheffield - he was a Steel Wire Temperer(?). They seem to be in Brunswick Rd.

Might that be him?

If it is this one he is included in the England Select Births and Christenings with parents William and Eliza. Baptised on 9th Nov 1887 at Christ Church, Attercliffe.

I haven't looked - but maybe his father died and his mother remarried - and Joseph may have been shown under the second husband's name until he married - and used his actual surname.

FindMyPast have the parish register entry :

John Joseph Barton, born 21 October 1887, baptised 9 November 1887.  Son of William (Labourer) and Eliza.  Address given as Ripon Street.

Modified to read Joseph

BumbleB -- I think you mean Joseph - not John. I have just looked at the record you found for that baptism -- it is Joseph.

Great find on the marriage - confirms father to be William.
