Recent Naval Records: Are Non Next Of Kin allowed to ask for or research these?

Hi, Everyone,
I'm not entirely sure if non next of kin are permitted to ask for details of someone who was in the Royal Navy and has recently died (just over 6 years ago)
Are there searchable databases, or would someone be able to assist me on here with a query about an officer who was on the carrier the HMS Illustrious just after World War Two?

You will need the consent of the next of kin. You can only order without NOK consent when the person  has been dead for twenty five years.

This should tell you what you need to know/do. There is a long wait for the records though, some people are saying up to a year

Thanks very much for that essential information!  I know that mother waited a long time before she eventually received my father's Army records....

For the post-WW2 period you should be able to get a fair impression of the service of an RN officer using the London Gazette in parallel with the Navy List.   cheers Pete
