Looking for birth of Ann Ramsay in Pathhead, Fife
« on: Tuesday 02 February 21 00:20 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the baptism or birth record for my ancestor Ann Ramsay, who married James MacDonald in 1865 in Arbroath, Angus. They were Catholic.

Census records say she was born around 1843 in Pathhead, Fife, and her marriage record lists her parents as James Ramsay and Ann Low. So far, I haven't been able to find her baptism record or any earlier census records before marriage.

I would appreciate any help with this. Thanks in advance.

Using Scotlandspeople

Baptism.....Roman Catholic......Arbroath.....1865 - 1875......
finds baptisms for Mary   MACDONALD   born  21 May 1866
James  MACDONALD   born 13 Mar 1868
William MACDONALD  born 25 Sep 1870

From previous research , Pathhead could be Dysart Fife.
Ancestry has an Ann Ramsay(born 1845 Dysart) , with parents James and Ann , living Angus in 1851.
This entry doesn't seem to be on FreeCEN so can't see further details.

Dundee Road, Forfar: James Ramsay, 50; wife Ann, 30; James, 10; Ann, 6; David, 1. All born Dysart, Fife except David, born Forfar.

There are at least two Pathheads in Fife. One is between Kirkcaldy and Dysart, in the parish of Dysart. https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15&lat=56.12174&lon=-3.14469&layers=5&b=1

The other is in the parish of Dunino. https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=56.29156&lon=-2.75065&layers=5&b=1
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks very much for this. I'm guessing it was the one in Dysart because it is a much bigger settlement. The other appears to merely be a farmstead, and the census seems to support it being in Dysart. I seem to have found a likely birth for James Ramsey in 1799 to another James Ramsey and Barbara Scot.

From the info found already, young David Ramsay born in 1850 looks to have been admitted in to an industrial school in 1859 www.fdca.org.uk/pdf%20files/IndustrialSchool_R.pdf:

David Ramsay
Born March 1850
birth place Forfar
Residence Millers Pend, Scouringburn.
Admission Date 14th Nov 1859
Ref 02/0455
Parents James Ramsay and Ann Low

Prior entry for him on 7th April 1859, ref 02/0389.

Not sure what the records holdings for this can be. If available, maybe further notes on the family?
