Thank you so much everyone. I think wivenhoe has cracked what I've been stuck on for a while. The injury and death comments in the newspaper lines up with the time where he disappears from my records.

The surname Black had never been in my sight and I'm now finding a lot more information from the Dumfriesshire region from going down that thread.

I am truly grateful!

You may have found this by now  ::) The family in 1881 in London www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27S-T7C5

In the 1871 English census, he stated his birth place was Castle Douglas (this is in
Kirkcudbrightshire) www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VRJ4-7PH

With Family Search you have to be signed on to view (free to register and use if you haven't used it previously).

This would fit for the Black family on the 1841 census www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/59034d1ee9379091b148eef5/adam-black-1841-kirkcudbrightshire-kelton-1811-?locale=en

As Maureen has mentioned, the image for the parish marriage for parents Robert and Marion is on Ancestry. Robert's father is showing as Adam Black, also a carpenter by trade. Witnesses to the marriage include a Robert and Margaret Denholm.

This looks to be Robert's christening entry www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYMP-T7J and you can see the source of the name Denholm, showing as his mother Janet's maiden name.

Robert looks to still be at home for the 1861 census:

Adam Black 56 joiner b. C Douglas, Kirkcudbright
Janet Black 58 b. Troqueer, Kirkcudbright
Robert Black 20 son joiner b. C Douglas, Kirkcudbright
John Black 18 son joiner b. Parton, Kirkcudbright
James Denholm 40 Relative pauper b. Troqueer
Adam Denholm 3 grandson

Address: Cargen Bridge Croft, Troqueer, Kirkcudbright

Adam and wife Janet are still there in 1871, with young 13yr old grandson Adam Black.

Sam, the main source of official scottish records is www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It is pay to view but costs are reasonable.

With Adam and Janet being alive past 1855, the year of the start of official registration in Scotland, their death certs will be available to view on SP. These should include full names for their parents (if known to the informant).

I think this is the death entry for Janet, Robert's mum:

Janet BLACK or DENHOLM
Age 75
Mother's maiden name GIBSON
1882
821/ 6
Dumfries

From that, I think this might be Janet's christening entry www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XBB4-2BZ

Adam Black must have died between 1871-81. Janet Black is by herself with a grandchild, still at Cargen Bridge Croft, in 1881.

Thank you so much Monica and Matt! That is such amazing information. Thank you for the links, this has taken me into a major dive into Scottish history.

What is an MI by the way?
