The nearest I have been able to find, in time and distance, is

William COOKE m Mary SHEERS in Tiverton on 16.11.1775

All other name-matches I have found from around that time (1777 and earlier) are even further from Westleigh. Can anyone help, please?

There is a marriage at Little Torrington 10 May 1772 between William COOK of Westleigh & Mary WILLIAMS of the parish. Additional baptisms at Westleigh:
10 Mar 1773 William COOK
2 Jul 1775 Elizabeth COOK

Brilliant. Why couldn't I find all that? I shall have another attempt.

According to my source, Little Torrington is less than 8 miles from Westleigh, so both date and distance fit perfectly.

I've just repeated my search criteria on FindMyPast, and brought up 5 extra marriages in the same time period, one of which is, of course, the one to which you drew my attention. Why it failed to appear first time around is anyone's guess.
