James Ferry, your grandad. Is that Henry James who m 1900 or someone else?


both of them basically are officially named as henry james ferry

and henry james ferry is the one who married in 1900

In the obit for Henry James Ferry 1940 it says he first went to Canterbury and then “ about 1880” to Auckland.

So is he the Henry Ferry on the  electoral roll for Cheviot in 1880-81. Residence Amberley.  If so, he must have been born before 1860 as the voting age was 21.

I think he may have lowered his age at the marriage in 1900 to reduce the age gap. The age calculation from his death seems more likely.

Have you found him arriving in NZ?

i also have a suspicion one of the ages for him doesnt match up

and no havent found his ship he arrived on like i have for my other greatgrandparents

henry james ferry stayed and died in New Zealand, and i believe his parents william and mary returned back to their country as there is no record of their death in new zealand

Why do you think his parents came here? It doesn’t say that in the obituary.

i think they came over for the wedding and returned home as it has their names on the marriage cert, but thinking about it now i guess you would just write their names down as your parents

ive checked that henry james ferry died in 1940 at 84 years old

on marriage cert says he was 37 years old add 44 = around 81 years old

his age is a mystery

Ancestry gives those hints based on what other people have added to their trees which is often not correct.

However I do think a date before 1860 is more likely than not.  As I said before.


What does the death certificate say?  Can you give all the information on that please.

it just says

i believe the marriage cert is a false age and birthyear is 1856 approx

1946/19872   Ferry   Mary   84Y

her age is correct on marriage cert and 1871 seems right
