Eliza, I think Maureen's Blackburn family may be worth researching further.... ::)

There is no obvious death to be found so far for Smith Whiteoak. It may well be he deserted wife and child. From this, wife Jane could very well have taken up with John Smith. Mary Ellen and Jane show in the census with John Smith from 1881-1911. Can't easily see a marriage so far under Whiteoak/Preston to a John Smith. If it the same Jane, she may not have been in a position to marry John Smith if Smith Whiteoak's death not confirmed?

There is no birth showing in 1884-6 for a Mary/Mary Ellen Smith in Barnoldswick.

Or...Smith Whiteoak wanted to make himself disappear and, with wife and child, moved to Blackburn where he shows for 1881-1911 at least under the name of John Smith.

I think the 1911 census that Maureen posted may be the most accurate for the three of them in respect of birth places. The age of John Smith in 1911 of 63 would also fit well with that of Smith Whiteoak.

Something to consider maybe as Maureen suggests?

Thank you MaureeninNY. Looks as though you are on to something there. Now how on earth can I find a John Smith! Wish he had stayed a Whiteoak, much easier to trace.
