WW2 Service record - what is the relevance of the square stamp

This is an extract from my Uncles army record showing his medal entitlement.

The MOD tell me he is entitled to the Defence Medal and the War Medal 1939/45 only which are both clearly stated on the image. They also confirmed he was entitled to the Cadet Force Medal which was published in the London Gazette but does not appear on the image.

My question is what is the relevance of the oblong stamp which says STARS 29 Jul 1948 MEDALS.
I cannot seem to get a straight answer from the MOD about this and it does intrigue me as to why it is there at all.
Any help would be welcome

I suspect it was due to medals being issued after WW2.  Below is a link to information about it, rather long winded but I get the impression that it was something to do with a delay in making them, hence they didn't get issued until 1948.

Under Campaigns, medals and decorations it lists
Mentioned in dispatches

Then the medals he was entitled to

Africa Star
1939-1945 Star
Defence Medal
War Medal

Then there is a box reading from the top
Stars Clasps

Medals issued

I’ve just got Dad’s medals and they are in the order listed in his papers with an oak leaf on the War Medal.

Dad was demobbed in 1946.

Just found the box the medals were in when dispatched to Dad. The address on the box is where my family were living in late 1948 which ties in with the date on his papers. The box has the number 222 on it which also ties in to the date on the form.

Did your Uncle claim his medals?

Ah, so it sounds as though I was on the right lines then Gibel. Those particular medals issued after the war.

I think so, had the medals been issued earlier the address would have been different.

I just wanted to thank everyone who has responded to my post. I now understand what the stamp was all about and why it was there and why it was dated accordingly.

Unlike WW1 Medals, WW2 Medals were not automatically issued the service person had to claim them. Many were not claimed until some years later,  some not at all.
