Who is Oliver MAYCOCK?
« on: Friday 05 February 21 16:46 GMT (UK) »
Frances (Fanny) CLAYPOLE (b. 1889)  married John MAYCOCK (b. 1888) in Belper in the summer of 1910. Perusal of birth indexes appears to suggest that they had no children.

However, living with them at the time of the 1939 Register is Oliver MAYCOCK, wood machinist, born January 22nd 1917. I couldn't find him in the relevant indexes either.

Help with an explanation would be gratefully received

Cheers Alan

On the 1939 register page, "22" has been altered to "15" in red ink. So I think this must be the Oliver John Maycock who died in Derby in 1994 with dob 15 January 1917.

That is probably correct BUT

Oliver (John) MAYCOCK - and variants that I could think of - does not exist in the FreeBMD indexes for the first quarter of 1917. Similarly there is no MAYCOCK / CLAYPOLE birth in the GRO indexes either.

Could adoption be an explanation?

Adoption is certainly a possibility. He was at the same address in 1937 when he failed to stop his bike at a Halt sign.

There's a marriage for Oliver Jack Maycock in Belper in 1941.

Bit vague and if his whole name was changed won't be any use but births for Mar 1917 Derbyshire throw up two with same mothers name.

Oliver Bird - Rotherham
Oliver Dean - Mansfield
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

The 1939 Register does not state relationships, he could be a nephew or no relation at all.

Cannot find a birth for him, but agree he dies in Derby as Oliver John  Maycock  born 15 Jan 1917 and he marries twice.
