John Hearn/Hearne/Hurn 1818
« on: Saturday 06 February 21 18:40 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for John Hearn born 1818 in Devon.I have his birthdate from the 1881 cencus in Wales.I know he had a son born William 1857 in Ashbrittle Somerset.I then find him with this son and this sons family in 1881 in Wales and John is by now a widower. It also says he is a gardener. He dies in Wales in 1886 and is buried there. On Williams baptism cert is say Perants John Hearn and Elizabeth. That is all i can find about John?Any help gratefully recieved. There is a hint from present family he may have been a Gypsy but that is not prooved.

You have a duplicate post here.  Duplicate posts can cause a lot of wasted time and effort.  As there is some uncertainty as to whether he was a traveller it may be best if you stick with the Devon board

You don't give us anything bout the son re age/geography

1881 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2W9-N6C8

ashbrittle (if correct) should be Wellington registration district
https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/wellington1.html

Nothing shows up though to give MMN etc

WHEN & WHERE is "On Williams baptism cert is say Perants John Hearn and Elizabeth."??

EDIT:
This may/may not be the son's marriage.

I found 3 baptisms at Ashbrittle:

James Hearn bp.10/9/1854, son of John and Elizabeth
William Hearn bp.25/12/1857          ditto
Charles Hern bp.19/5/1860              ditto

Then found Elizabeth's burial:

Elizabeth Hern (alias Brice)   38  bur.27/5/1860 Ashbrittle
plus a John Hern alias Brice   19  bur.25/11/1870 Ashbrittle
          Charles Herne   2    bur.16/3/1862 Ashbrittle

Nothing under Hearn/var. 1861 Ashbrittle so looked under Brice:

John Brice     43      widr.      Ag. Lab.         born Woodbury, Devon
Thomas Brice  8                                        born Holcombe Rogus, Devon
James Brice   6                                          born Ashbrittle, Somerset
William Brice  3                                               ditto

Baby Charles - also as Brice - is living with a family in Hockworthy, Devon

In Holcombe Rogus, Devon there is John Brice bc.1849 Ashbrittle who I think is the one buried there in 1870.

Think I have found them in 1851 at Hockworthy, Devon - transcribed on Ancestry as 'Urn' but looks like Hern.

Since 'John' states in 1861 that he was born Woodbury, Devon I then checked baptisms:

John Hearne  bp.2/9/1819 Woodbury, Devon, son of John and Agnes.

Still marriage to find for John and Elizabeth - under Hearn/vars/ or Brice!

However, have found where 'alias' of Brice comes from:

His parents: John Hern married Agnes Brice 20/4/1814 Halberton, Devon.

Can't see that John and Elizabeth registered their childrens births under either surname.

Found baptisms for 3 eldest children:

George Hern 9/11/1845 Holcombe Rogus, Devon, son of John and Elizabeth
John Hern 3/9/1848 Ashbrittle, Somerset                      ditto
Thomas Hearn 2/11/1851 Holcombe Rogus, Devon                  ditto

Checked births again and found they did register 2 of their children namely John Hern Sept.qtr.1848 Wellington Reg. District - mmn Jewell and Thomas Hearn Dec.qtr.1851 Wellington mmn Jewell.

This confirms a marriage I found earlier:

John Hearn and Elizabeth Jewell married 29/7/1845 Halberton, Devon (same place where his parents married).    Can't confirm father's names because although I could view copies of original marriage certificates the incumbent has not filled in names of fathers, not just on their certificate but also on many others that I looked at randomly for 1845 and 1846.  Never come across that before.

Census shows Elizabeth Jewell bc.1822 Bampton, Devon - however, baptisms for this parish from 1813 until end June 1844 are missing online unfortunately.
