Crewkerne - (Sheep) Market Street, 1841 Census
« on: Sunday 07 February 21 05:34 GMT (UK) »
Hello!

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ14-FY7

Why would this 1841 census record for Crewkerne record 83 persons living together on (Sheep) Market Street? I know the '41 census wasn't as detailed as subsequent ones, and so I wondered whether the census recorded everyone living on the street at that time, or whether these people (incl. my 4x GGPs) were all in an institution like a workhouse.

Has anyone here who knows Crewkerne's history studied the Crewkerne 1841 census in detail?

Going through the people, there's a Sophia Gosney, for example, (19) who wasn't living with her parents, John and Anne Gosney, on South St. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ14-JYR
It's odd.
Any takers?  :)

I don't think they are all living together as such just have the same general address.

The enumeration schedule reads - all that part of the town of Crewkerne comprising Sheep Market Street, Goulds? Barton, Oxen Lane and Church Street.

The lines in the left hand column under "houses" indicate separate households.

Sophia has occupation FS which I believe is female servant so has left home and is making her own living.

Welcome to rootschat

As Milliepede says the / &  //  marks on the left hand side of the entries indicate separate houses and households within the houses.  // is the indicator for a house which in some cases is broken up into a separate household within it with /.   If you are relying on a transcript then they are sometimes incorrectly listed without breaking up the dwellings.

Thank you both very much. Yes, I was relying on a transcript. That explains it.  :)
