Royal reserves regiments in 1900
« on: Sunday 07 February 21 15:49 GMT (UK) »
I have obtained the Military attestation papers of Robert FRANCIS from Findmypast.
Robert FRANCIS joined the Royal Reserves Regiments on the 20th March 1900 at Hounslow.
His regiment number was 2282.
He was in Berwick on the 24th March 1900

Details on his attestation paper are very limited and the STATEMENT of SERVICES has just a few lines on it, as follows
Service towards limited engagement reckons from 20/3/1900
Joined at Berwick on 24/3/1900
R S Reserve  2Bn  Discharged on completion of limited engagement 19/3/1901
then
Enlisted into Royal Garrison Regs 29/3/1901

Thats really all I know about his Military life.

Can anyone throw light on if there should be more about him and where I might get/find it ?
Is there a Military regiment museum somewhere that could help me ?
Does what I have mean he was only in the Military for 1 year or is there more to be found when he goes into the Royal Garrison Regs ?

I am afraid this is not my area of expertise at all, so any guidance/help/suggestions etc. would be gratefully received

It doesn't appear from the records, that he saw any active service.  I noticed that he had been in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers previously.

I see from the 1901 census that his occupation is given as soldier.

I can't find the Francis family in 1911 nor can I find a marriage for Robert and Edith.  The children's births don't appear to have been registered either.

Royal Garrison Regiment

Can anyone tell me if there is a Museum or some other place that can assist me with the Royal Garrison Regiment. When and where they served from 13th March 1901 until at least the middle of 1903 and where they were stationed.

An ancestor of mine Robert FRANCIS served with them and then deserted on the 13th May 1903. I do not know why he did so and would so love to find out why

Any pointer, no matter how small  would be great

Many thanks

The Royal Garrison Regiment consisted of 5 Battalions.
Is it known which battalion Robert Francis served in?

The link below gives the history of each of the 5 Battalions:

He was with 2nd Battalion.

Looking at his military history sheet he was posted to Gibraltar on 15 May 1901 and there are no further entries - presumably that is where he deserted.

I see that he'd just signed on for a further 2 years service just a few months before he deserted.
