48th Regiment of foot Northamptonshire
« on: Sunday 07 February 21 18:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello, my GGG Grandfather was Denis Hessian (ion) Born Co Mayo in 1829. Joined 48th Reg of foot in Weedon Barracks, I have WO12 records for 1851.  No 2375.  And that's it!  Why no more WO records, no reference to going to the Crimea, in 1855 and  no English or Irish death records.
He married in Weedon in 1852, to Esther Shaw.  Joseph James Merry Hessian was born in 1855, but there is NO fathers name.  Where was he between 1852 and now !!!
Esther married again in 1859, stating she was a widow.     Any help will be gratefully received.

Welcome to rootschat

I suspect that both Joseph (1855) and John (1857) were probably not the children of Denis.

Have you looked at TNA website to see what records are available to view at Kew, not all military records are available online.

Hi Rosie99

Thank you so much for your swift reply.  I suspect the same, that they are not his children.

Thank you for the suggestion about the Kew records, I'm on it !

Now of course, I dont have a GG Grandfather !  All I have is that Joseph was born in the Daventry Union.  As stated by his Birth cert.  This is indeed the work house of the area.  However, it is also the Census area for the Barracks where Denis was stationed.  a few yards from his wife's home. And a second hand comment about 'Merry'  his third forename saying that it is his fathers surname !!
Not sure I shall be able to crack that !

I really appreciate your reply, many thanks

Michael

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

Hi Tazzie,

Thank you for your swift reply.  Yes, it seems their father is not on the birth records.
So I'm thinking he was no longer in Dodford.
I'm intrigued by the fact that Esthers sister, Comfort, who married a John Howard 1855, and died less than a year later childless.
And Esthers second son is called John Howard Hessian....
Thank you for your help, very much appreciated
Michael

Hi Tazzie,

How much a coincidence, if it were not for the virus I was planning on a visit to Dodford Church, hopefully I will be able to soon.  I'm in Coventry, not moved far from my roots, my mothers family well eastablished in Rugby.

Thank you !  Michael
