Death certificate from New york
« on: Sunday 07 February 21 18:13 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks after many years of searching for information on my ancestors who emigrated to New York in the 1860s i have had two break throughs. I have identified their marriage record for Manhatten in 1868.  I followed this up by completing an application for a copy of the death cert but unfortunately i have been informed that they are unable to trace. any suggestions on next steps.

Hi with reference to above appeal as the image has been removed due to copyright here are the details:

Death of Francis Sweeney
sex         Male
Born        USA
Spouse    Bridget Sweeney
Child        Helen C Sweeney
I know Bridget had another child a son Frank Sweeney born 1879 in Brooklyn. i assume that Francis died just before Franks birth.

This is probably a record for Helen that lists her parents.  A child would not be listed on a parent’s death record unless it was as an informant.

Where did you request a death record?

That search result you found was Helen's death record, as the certificate number matches.  You can see some of the detail here - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WR3-PW5  A more detailed index says she died at 264 Classon Avenue, Brooklyn due to uremic coma, interstitial nephritis, and chronic endocarditis.  She was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, was a retired school teacher, mother b. Ireland, father b. US.  The executor was cousin Catherin P John.

If Helen is from the family you're looking for, her obituary is here - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/69698652/obituary-for-helen-c-sweeney-aged-45/  It says no immediate relatives survive.

Hi Shellyesq firstly many thanks for your prompt reply to my enquiry. I applied via the link on the ancestry page which i have used in the past. thanks for the clarification as to who's death certificate the number referred to. The newspaper obituary was fantastic but once again it has posed more questions as my great grandmother benefited from the sale of the property in Classon Ave. my Great grandmother was never out of Ireland.
Many Thanks
Gerry

You're welcome.

It looks like this is the death record for Frank Sweeney (the son) - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WF6-R61  Frank's obituary is here - https://www.newspapers.com/clip/69789391/

Considering that both Frank & Helen were buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, I wouldn't be surprised if their parents were there as well.  The cemetery's records can be searched here - https://www.ccbklyn.org/information-news/locate-a-loved-one/  A search for the two of them with the above death dates gives results that says Section: JOHN | Row: N | Plot: 36  There is a result for a Bridget Sweeney who was interred on 4 Jan. 1891 in the same plot.  The death record mentions the same Classon Avenue address - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:24MH-8YF
