Advice on confirming a link
« on: Monday 08 February 21 20:33 GMT (UK) »
I'm after some general (or specific) advice if anyone can help me please.

My 2x ggf was Edward Williams (b. approx 1851) and he married Sarah Ann Colburn (Colbourn) on Christmas Day 1873 at St Mary's, Bilston. I know these are correct and are my people.

On the marriage entry on FindMyPast it shows Edward's father's name as William Williams. When I look on census returns prior to the 1873 marriage I can find a household each decade in Queens Street, Bilston with an Edward Williams son and William Williams father and the age for Edward is about the right. But how can I know beyond, "A few facts kind of fit" to prove this is my Edward? There are a lot of Williams, Williams' and Edwards about!

If I purchased Edward's marriage or birth certificates they would still only tell me his father was called William.

Am I stuck or am I having some kind of writers block?

Thanks
Steve

It would give you William's occupation which might be a clue?

You need to buy the marriage certificate.

There is always the possibility that one or both the witnesses were his siblings. Plus the marriage certificate will show his address, if you are lucky it may tally with the address of the family you have found in the census.

The image of Edward's marriage entry is on FindMyPast so no need to pay extra. It looks like William was a miner and the witnesses were Samuel Cox and Mary Ann Williams. All but Samuel made X.
Residence is just Bilston.

How do you see the image Comberton? The image is usually just the page of the register isn't it?

Choose Parish marriages on FindMyPast, the Banns image is also there.

Got it. Thank you. William being a miner in Bilston isn't a great match but one of the witnesses was Mary Ann Williams and the family I found included a Mary Ann Williams, so that's made it a bit firmer.

Ha, and the only Samuel Cox (the other witness) in Bilston in 1871 just happened to live next door to the Colbourns!
