Gortgill Primary School, Toomebridge 1919-1924
« on: Tuesday 09 February 21 12:37 GMT (UK) »
My father spent about ten years of his early childhood in Toomebridge, County Antrim, living at his grandparents farmhouse in Roguery Road.        The nearest school to the farm was Gortgill Primary, a very short distance up the road from the farm gates, so I'm guessing that is where he went.

I've googled it and had a look on Google maps and I get a picture of a little school house, but it looks like the only thing that remains there is a bus stop!

Is there anyone here who has any information about the school?    Looking at the 1901 census, it appears that one of my relatives was an assistant teacher there in 1910, but I wonder how much longer after that it lasted.

Still going strong in 1949.

Plaque on the front of the school-house says built in 1902.

Thanks KG.  Where did you see the picture with the plaque on the front?    I can't find any pic on the second link.   (Maybe it's just me; I'm not too brilliant with links etc.)

I'd love to find an old school photograph, I suppose.   I mean, complete with pupils.    It'd be a very, very long shot, but there must be one out there somewhere.

Look on Google Maps Street View on the Roguery Road.

Or, view the plaque at https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2715657 .

When open, various National School records are available to view at PRONI in Belfast:
