This him?
Liverpool, England, Crew Lists 1861-1919

John Weaver
Age:    38
Birth Place:    Montgomery
Event Date:    11 Feb 1868
Ship Name:    Agnes Jack

Engaged as a fireman. Joined the ship in Cardiff

Added: there's a couple of records from that year involving that ship and Liverpool

Maybe actually your right Mabel Bagshawe  :) :)  the description of him in 1871 could actually read "Fireman Agnes Jack" - the first word is Fireman and the last is Jack and although there is a few words not too readable the last 6 letters (if incorrectly spelt showing 2 s's) reads agness

He was lucky he left the Agnes Jack and settled in Liverpool. She was wrecked in 1883 off Gower

Yeah I've just read that myself and on looking further at the census the squiggle at the beginning might well be SS  ;)
Still need to find Ann dying though between 1871 and 1874 for it too fit 100% i guess  :-\

Maybe Ann his wife didn't die.........but John pretended as if he did - lost at sea for example

1881 Census - Ann Eliza Weaver (Lodger) Widow aged 40 Charwoman - birth place St Georges in the East (where she was also shown as born on 1871 census) and living back in St Georges in the East.

Also marriage 1867 John Weaver marrying Ann Eliza Bailey Q3 in Marylebone, London

I was wondering that too, given the lack of obvious death

Wife in every port!

I have messaged the person who uploaded the written details from the marriage in 1874 this morning also so hopefully they'll come back quick as they seem to be a regular user on Ancestry.
It does appear more likely to be him though certainly in 1871 and the matching up with the ships lists between 1867 to 1871 that it was the Agnes Jack.
Plus as already confirmed he's not in the Cardiff/Wales area in 1881 but one has popped up in Liverpool by then and the other John Weaver has remained in the West Bromwich area.
There is a link too with one of John Weaver's children's deaths referring him to be a "Dock Board" Labourer in 1896 slightly altering the previous Engine Driver status occupation and naturally the dock word links to Liverpool and shipping - maybe we are on the right track  :)

John Weaver didn't marry Ann Eliza Bailey. From the LMA marriages, that John Weaver, farmer, married the other female on the page Laura Williams and his father was Thomas Weaver, also a farmer.
There is a possible marriage registered at Cardiff march qtr 1868 with Annie Floyd on the same page. But that might be this couple who are married not both mothers as FamilySearch transcription shows

Merchant seaman record from 1858 for John Weaver 24 of Montgomery on the Caledonia of Leith. Think it's noted Fi for fireman.

Interesting Osprey  :)
Be interesting to see if he's in Scotland in 1871 too - maybe he wasn't married after all??
Plus there were technically 3 John Weaver's born in Montgomeryshire around 1830 - the other one had parents called Richard and Margaret born 1830.  I know ours is William but maybe the other 2 in 1871 in West Bromwich and Cardiff one might have had Richard as his Father and we've been thinking all along he must have been one of these 2 when our one never married and was just sailing around on ships!  :D
