Lowthers from Bath
« on: Wednesday 10 February 21 22:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
I'd like to ask if anyone here might have any information on the Lowther family of the Bath/Bridgwater area. I would love to try and connect them with the Lowther baronets from Cumberland, which seem like the only Lowther family there is. I looked at surname distributions, and Lowther is rare in Somerset and concentrated in Cumbria and the northwest, and given that my family were in a big town, Bath, it seems like they were not native to the area. My 2nd grandaunt was told to 'remember her grandmother was a Lowther' to make sure she acted in a ladylike way. My earliest documented ancestor in that line is a Henry Lowther (1740-1805), who married Elizabeth Townsend and whose son, John (1766-?), was baptised (born too?) in Bath. Henry was buried in Bridgwater, St Mary's Church.
Thanks
Francis

The 1805 Bridgwater burial is for a 'Henry Lowther son of William'  with no age at death given.
There are two other burials in Bridgewater for Lowther, William in 1824 age 58 (bn c1766 and Sarah in 1852 bn c1762.   I would presume that Henry was probably the (unmarried?) son of this couple and not your Henry.

Where was John baptised, is he the John that married Mary Walter in 1786 in Bath, one of the marriage witnesses was an E Lowther.

I think I can see your tree on Ancestry so will add a bit more information  :-\

Starting with Charles James Lowther who married Susanna Crick in London in 1823, census indicate that he was born in Bath c1800.  Witnesses to his marriage were John Lowther (jnr?) and Mary Walter Lowther.

Charles father John Lowther married Mary Walter in Bath in 1785.  The tree gives no further information on Johns birth or death.

ADDED
Children baptised at Bath with parents John & Mary
Henry Lowther1787
Mary Walter Lowther 1792
John Townsend Lowther 1793
Betty Lowther 1794

yep, John Lowther married Elizabeth Walter in Bath in 1786. Amazingly, the surname 'Townsend' from John Lowther's mother, has been handed down in my family for centuries. My gt grandfather had it as a middle name!

Death duty register c1825 shows William Lowther - Executor Sarah Lowther of Bridgwater, Somerset

How do you come to a father named Henry for John without a birth or baptism record for John.  :-\

John married a Mary Walter not Elizabeth.

Have you traced the origins of the surname Townsend.

I meant Mary Walter. As to how I know about Henry and Elizabeth, well it's just unsourced ancestry family trees unfortunately. I know it's terrible genealogical practice, but it's so tempting when it chimes so well with what you know about the family (Townsend being present throughout the whole Lowther family)  :-\
