Sometimes these 'names' start off as someone naming a child after someone 'famous'. and it carries on as others think it is family history.  Have you located a Lowther / Townsend marriage or established at what point the name Townsend was being used.  It is obviously up to you whether you want to base your tree on other peoples trees, never be swayed by the fact lots of people are quoting the same people in their trees as a lot of the time they are just blindly copying unsourced information.

Did John & Mary move permanently to London in the early 1800's.  Can you find any records of them or any further children after Charles (1800)

By origins of the surname Townsend I meant people not places.  When was the Townsend name first used in your family and by whom

Wow, I think that must be CJL's brother. I had a look into CJL's siblings. Henry and Betty both died young, in Wiltshire, oddly, although I'm certain that it's them as it says 'from Bath' on the margin of the record. Mary Walter Lowther is nowhere to be seen, and John Townsend sort of floats around the London area, with no clear records. As to where Townsend appears first, then JTL would be the first, followed by one of CJL's sons, and many of his grandsons

Do you reckon that the Mary registered dead in 1827 is Mary Walter Lowther, CJL's sister, or Mary Lowther nee Walter, his mother?

I think that it is probably CJL's sister and that it was also her that witnessed CJL's marriage in 1823.
If the other witness was John Lowther jnr. then probably John Townsend Lowther.  Perhaps he was the John mentioned on the death duty index.

It would be good to locate John & Mary senior  :)

I see that the Indenture for Charles James Lowther states his father is John Lowther of Great Queen St, Lincolns Inn - Occupation Builder.
