Immigrants - Thomas Elliott Johnston/Johnson and Harriet Coote
« on: Thursday 11 February 21 01:59 GMT (UK) »
The above are my 3rd gr Grandparents. Thomas b: 1819 in Dublin, Ireland and Harriet b: 1816 Dublin, married in Dublin.
They had seven  children born in Dublin between 1840 and 1850.
Two children born in Victoria, Australia 1854 and 1857.
I am trying to find out when they came to Melbourne, Vic. The whole family came, I have the Australian records of their deaths and marriages etc, and on Harriet's Vic death certificate she names all of the children

The children are Clara Maria b 1840, (my 2nd g Grandmother) Harriet  Coote 1841, John Douglas 1843, Mary Elizabeth 1845, Thomas Frederick 1846, Annie Evelyn 1848, Charles 1850 (all born in Dublin) William 1854 and Stella 1850 born in Aust

So by my reckoning they must have immigrated between 1850 and 1853.Can anyone help me with the immigration record please.

That is the shipping record that looks the most promising to me.
The father Thomas is recorded as a “clerk”. Does that fit with his occupation in Australia?
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)
Clark – Faulds – Cuthbertson – Bryson – Wilson: (Ayrshire & Renfrewshire)
Neale – Cater – Kinder - Harrison: (Warwickshire & Queensland)
Roberts - Spry: (Cornwall, Middlesex & Queensland)
Munster: (Schleswig-Holstein & Queensland) and Plate: (Braunschweig, Neubruck & Queensland & New York)

Hi
I am not getting the children's names quite as you list them on this snip from Emigrant August 1852 either.

This information moves away from the point of your inquiry, and perhaps you already have it.

This is one of several advertisements for a  school at his home in Parkville.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/66148812

A Commercial School for boys 1888.
T E Johnstone late head teacher Education  Department.

Now his teacher record, found on Ancestry (though a bit hard to do!)

There is mention of H T (Head Teacher) at Greensborough State School as mentioned in his advertisement, but the other remarks, comments and admonishments are not illustrious  ::)

I will type up some of them if you wish ;) Perhaps you have access.

His appointment began 1864 or 65 I think. It is a disorderly looking record.
He resigned in 1876 .

Cass,Neale and Sue, thank you for your replies,  I do have the written passenger list that you posted Sue, however to me it didn't seem right, not all of the children are there? nor are the children's ages correct, so, I am a little confused.
I have the info on Thomas Elliot thank you Sue for your offer.
Maybe I have to get back to the drawing board.

Interesting teacher record I think.
Employed for a lengthy period but comments etc from his superiors so negative!
