George Gabriel Gess
« on: Friday 12 February 21 01:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to trace my mother's lineage. I've managed to trace back to a George Gabriel Gess born 1805 in Sussex. That's where I hit a brick wall. Being in Australia I cannot (read as don't know how to) access parish records or the like. Can anyone help? ;D

Welcome to RootsChat.

For £15 for a year's membership it would be worth you joining the Sussex Family History Group where pretty well all Sussex parish records for births and burials can be viewed,  The SFHG also produce a Sussex Marriage Index CD which is useful for that family event.

If you give us some more details we can see what we can find for you.

Do you know Georges occp or when he arrived in Australia?

There is a Seamans Hospital record in 1832 for a George Gess born 1804 Ticehurst, Sussex.
In for 24 days with a inflamed leg.

Trish :)

Thanks Trish. I'm still trying to get my head around all the wonderful people who have responded. I'm a 71 yo retired Veteran and am having trouble negotiating the site. I will persevere. No info on arrival as yet but I believe he was a farmer in England, He tried his hand at gold and as a publican near Sofala once here.

Did he marry in the UK and if so what was his wife's name, we might be able to find the marriage and from that both of their home parishes, might even be lucky and find his father's name - sometimes helps to come forwards in time to a known to then go backwards.

How do you know he came from Sussex, England?

I note there is a Sussex in NSW and wonder if he was actually born there, possibly the son of a George Gess who was one of the first convicts to arrive in 1787?

Thank you, I've checked NSW BDM to no avail.
