Sussex OPC  http://www.sussex-opc.org/index.php?no=1

I checked for "gess" (and variables). Gess is a rare bird in Sussex.

How do you know he came from Sussex, England?

I note there is a Sussex in NSW and wonder if he was actually born there, possibly the son of a George Gess who was one of the first convicts to arrive in 1787?

Annette

I think this is a real possibility.    Some of those who arrived on the First Fleet were involved in setting up at Sydney Cove.  Others went to Norfolk Island.   So may I note that the following is my understanding of an INDEX entry made some 40 years ago, and the transcribed was reading from a film on a reel  on a reader.   The film had been made in the 1930s.   On that reel were baptismal entries from Norfolk Island,  1790s.

Several entries were for children born to George GUEST and Mary BATEMAN.   One son was named George.

It is entirely possible that GUEST is correct,  but it is also possible it could be GESS ...

The Norfolk Island settlement was transferred to VDL  in the 1810s ... VDL, I.e.  Tasmania.
