I am trying to trace the above who was a Squadron Leader in the RAF in WW". I have found a mention of possibly him, as a 'War Substantive Squadron Leader' can anyone tell me what this means please?

That is the full formal title of his rank.  A War Substantive rank was held only for the duration of the war, substantive meaning permanent/confirmed.
