1890 census, Fred Swain
« on: Saturday 13 February 21 23:32 GMT (UK) »
Trying to locate Fred (Frederick A Swain) Swain born Yorkshire England 1856. He is on the 1880 in Millbury Massachusetts, occupation Blacksmith, with wife Elizabeth & Joseph Hallows also a Blacksmith. A naturalization document dated 21 Oct 1891 shows him at Providence St Millbury. Any help to locate him in 1890 or anything else would be appreciated.

The 1890 census was almost entirely destroyed by fire; only a few sheets remain.  There are many other Massachusetts records at FamilySearch:

What's really strange is the Joseph Hallows who appeared with him in the 1880 census also disappears. The parallel between the two is uncanny.

1880 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MHFQ-J2V

Both of them are naturalized on 21 October 1891 in Worcester Superior Court. Both are living in Millbury, Fred on Providence St and Joseph on Riverlin Street. Providence & Riverlin Street do intersect with Riverlin dead ending into Providence St.

Fred's Naturalization: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VXRZ-P7S

Joseph's Naturalization: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VX51-BXD

After the naturalization records both just disappear. I can see one, but both? Did they return to England?

==============

I think I found the answer to my question.

This appears to be Frederick A Swain living with a "Hallows" family in 1871. Also living there is their son Joseph Hallows(blacksmith).

1871 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VBCL-LLL

This appears to Fred and Elizabeth back in England in 1901. He is listed as an "Edge tool forger" (blacksmith)

1901 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9R6-FXT

It appears Joseph Hallow got married in 1883.

Marriage: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N49H-3X6

He died in Millbury in 1896.

Death: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FHYS-M5D

Perhaps after Joseph Hallows death is when Fred & Elizabeth more back to England?

I had also questioned did Fred & Elizabeth return to England?  but what bothers me is that his mother Clara Lucinda (nee Barnes) who was also Joseph Hallows step mother was also in Massachusetts with them along with 2 other of her Hallows children. She married a John Bentley 1899 Cambridge Massachusetts aged 63 and died 1900 Boston Massachusetts. I read with interest the City directory for Fred A Swain!! Can I ask what...."boards P.W Graves Providence" means?

I checked the Worcester Daily Spy, which covers Millbury news and found no mention of Fred Swain. But there were mentions of Joseph Hallows, including his obit  and funeral.

The only family his obit mentions, was a wife and 4 children. The obit also mentioned he was employed at the chisel works of Charles Buck. I assume this is the same place, Buck's factory, as mentioned in the directory for Fred Swain.

The other thing that I noticed was in the funeral article, the names of the casket bearers were listed. I would have thought Fred's name would have been listed, but it wasn't.

Can I ask what...."boards P.W Graves Providence" means?

It looks like he was a boarder in the home of P.W. Graves on Providence Street.  The 1886 Millbury city directory has this:
Graves, P W, machinist, home Providence

The 1880 census has Parley W. Graves at the same address as Fred, so I think he's the P.W.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9YBZ-C8X?i=19&cc=1417683&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AMHFQ-J2C
