Parents of John EDDOWES b. 1850 Wrexham
« on: Sunday 14 February 21 18:08 GMT (UK) »
I am following the family line of Alfred EDDOWES. I believe Alfred’s parents were John EDDOWES and Mary Croxon and I am currently trying to establish the parents of John EDDOWES.  The information I have is:
The marriage record shows John Eddowes married a Mary Croxon at St John The Baptist Chester on 30 July 1872, stating he was 22 years old.  Mary Croxon was also 22 yrs.  It gives John as a tailor and his father was Thomas Eddowes, labourer.
I can find two children born to a John Eddowes with mmn Croxon:
Alfred Eddowes born M. Qtr 1874 Wrexham, Vol 11B Pg 236 – Baptism 25th
Bessie Eddowes born M. Qtr 1876 Wrexham, Vol 11B Pg 325

I can find Alfred on 1891 census (servant: Rossett), 1901census (married with 2 children) and 1911 census (married with 4 children). I can’t see Alfred on the 1881 where I might have expected to find him with his parents.

When searching John Eddowes on census records there appear to be two contenders – one born approx. 1846 and the other 1850/51, both giving father Thomas and mother Ann.  Both give Wrexham as birth place.

1.   John Eddowes b. 1850/51, father Thomas b.1824 and mother Ann b.1811 – listed on 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 census.
2.   John Eddowes b. 1846, father Thomas b. 1816 and mother Ann b.1826. I can only see them in 1851 and 1861.

Searching for a marriage of a Thomas Eddowes to an Ann, I find a marriage Qtr 4 1847 Wrexham Vol27 page 465 to both an ANN JONES and an ANN CROSS.  Without ordering a marriage certificate is there anyway I can determine which Ann this Thomas Eddowes married? I don't want to assume a marriage should come before the birth e.g. a marriage in 1847 would suggest the 1850 birth and therefore the mother is ANN CROSS? Am I missing something vital?

GRO entry for JOHN EDDOWES birth Dec Qtr 1845, Wrexham Vol 27 pg 277 mmn JONES
GRO entry for JOHN EDDOWES birth Dec Qtr 1850, Wrexham Vol 27 pg 264 mmn CROSS

I apologise if this is wordy and I hope I have explained my dilemma.  I would welcome any comments that might be able to help.  Thank you.

Charles Samuel Evans 32 bach bricklayer Rhostyclun father Samuel Evans deceased innkeeper
Mary Croxon 28 spinster Rhostyclun father Thomas Croxon deceased

Licence is interesting as it would mean no banns would be read.

well, there was a divorce.

So John the tailor with his parents in 1881 is the correct one

Possible burial 29 April 1886 John Eddowes 36 workhouse.

Thanks again Osprey for unravelling this. I wasn’t expecting a divorce, quite unusual for the times I presume. So, am I right in deducing that the John Eddowes I’m following was born Dec qtr 1850 and therefore his mother was Ann Cross born 1811 Chatham (1881 census)?

Yes, very unusual for the times. I was worried that it was bigamy so glad to find the newspaper report. Working from his age at marriage, he was the one registered 1850 mmn Cross and had a sister Emma.
marriage dec qtr 1847, North Wales Bmd show it as a civil marriage so there will be no parish entry.

Couple of possible baptisms for Thomas, one in 1824 & one in 1826, both with father Thomas a labourer, one has mother Martha, the other Charlotte.
Burials in Wrexham 1 July 1843 of Martha Eddowes 43 of Gresford
10 Dec 1849 of Charlotte Eddowes 71 of Wrexham Regis
5 April 1845 of Thomas Eddowes 68 of Wrexham Regis

And the 1841 census is missing for the area so no help there.
