I am following the family line of Alfred EDDOWES. I believe Alfred’s parents were John EDDOWES and Mary Croxon and I am currently trying to establish the parents of John EDDOWES. The information I have is:
The marriage record shows John Eddowes married a Mary Croxon at St John The Baptist Chester on 30 July 1872, stating he was 22 years old. Mary Croxon was also 22 yrs. It gives John as a tailor and his father was Thomas Eddowes, labourer.
I can find two children born to a John Eddowes with mmn Croxon:
Alfred Eddowes born M. Qtr 1874 Wrexham, Vol 11B Pg 236 – Baptism 25th
Bessie Eddowes born M. Qtr 1876 Wrexham, Vol 11B Pg 325
I can find Alfred on 1891 census (servant: Rossett), 1901census (married with 2 children) and 1911 census (married with 4 children). I can’t see Alfred on the 1881 where I might have expected to find him with his parents.
When searching John Eddowes on census records there appear to be two contenders – one born approx. 1846 and the other 1850/51, both giving father Thomas and mother Ann. Both give Wrexham as birth place.
1. John Eddowes b. 1850/51, father Thomas b.1824 and mother Ann b.1811 – listed on 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1881 census.
2. John Eddowes b. 1846, father Thomas b. 1816 and mother Ann b.1826. I can only see them in 1851 and 1861.
Searching for a marriage of a Thomas Eddowes to an Ann, I find a marriage Qtr 4 1847 Wrexham Vol27 page 465 to both an ANN JONES and an ANN CROSS. Without ordering a marriage certificate is there anyway I can determine which Ann this Thomas Eddowes married? I don't want to assume a marriage should come before the birth e.g. a marriage in 1847 would suggest the 1850 birth and therefore the mother is ANN CROSS? Am I missing something vital?

I apologise if this is wordy and I hope I have explained my dilemma. I would welcome any comments that might be able to help. Thank you.
