Maiden name for Elizabeth Scanes (1791-c.1843)
« on: Sunday 14 February 21 22:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
You might recognise me from a previous enquiry here about Elizabeth Cox, wife of George Scanes, my ancestor. I's now like to request a lookup to try and find the maiden name of Elizabeth Scanes (nee ?), wife of John Scanes (1796-1866). Scanes is listed as a cooper in Exeter in the 1841 census. His wife is listed as an Elizabeth, born c.1791. John Scanes' ancestry is well known; he was born in Ide, near Exeter. However, his wife is enigmatic, and I haven't been able to find a maiden name. The surname 'Hiscock' comes up in a certain record, but the John Scanes of Mottisfont seems to be a different person. Elizabeth died between 1841 and 1845 (there are a few death records in between those dates, one of which is Elizabeth). The Scanes had two children; George, my ancestor, and Mary Ann. Could someone please have a look into this and try and find Elizabeth's birth name?
Thanks,
Francis

Francis

There is a marriage at St John Exeter on 24 Aug 1823 that might fit.

John SCANES (Bachelor) otp, Cooper
Elizabeth CROSS (Spinster) otp
Married after banns, the parties being of age
Both signed in presence of Chas. Cross and JH Waddon?

Hi,
I think that must be her  :D. There are two Elizabeth Crosses born at that time, one in Stoke Fleming and one in Axminster, None of the fathers are called Charles. Any way of finding which one is my ancestor?

Do either of the baptisms have a mother Mary or Mary Ann - the name of the married 1823 Elizabeth's daughter? Did either of the baptisms have a brother Charles who could have been the witness?

There is a marriage for a John Scanes Exeter 1847 but John seems to be alone in 1851?

Given the name of their eldest son I wonder if this is Elizabeth, sadly the name on family search is missing, maybe someone can find it elsewhere.

Elizabeth - image on FindMyPast.  First half of name is missing but "abeth" remains!

A Charles CROSS was baptised at Exeter St John 6 Nov 1798 son of Richard & Sarah. They appear to have married in 1797 at Exeter St John.
