Help Needed finding a Couple more Burial Records in Blyth Please!
« on: Monday 15 February 21 15:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I am trying to locate both the death index records & burial records for my 4x gt grandparents and meeting with some difficulty!

John Stephenson born around 1793-96 in Hendon, Sunderland, Durham married Ann Wilson (born 1796 in Earsdon, Northumberland) on 19th March 1816 at St Alban, Earsdon.

I have them on the following censuses:

1841 - Bath Row, Northumberland Street, Blyth (HO107/820/13/26/2) John A Pilot.
1851 - Ridley Terrace, Blyth (HO107/2412/326/49) John a Pilot.
1861 - Ridley Street, Blyth (RG9/3849/65/20) John again a Pilot. Ann is shown as Jane.

After the 1861 census nothing for either of them. Possible deaths for Ann in 1862 & 1864 are not her as the ages are incorrect.

John i thought died in 1862 aged 66, but having found a couple of newspaper articles re the death of a 66 year old John Stephenson, this chap appears to be of North Shields and a shipowner to boot! I am now confused to say the least!

When & where did John & Ann die?

They had six children whom I know all about.

Any and all assistance with sorting this one out will be gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

Expect you've tried under alternative spellings like Stevenson?

Do you know what A Pilot referred to?

Guessing neither of them were with any of the children in 1871  :-\

When you say Ann was incorrectly shown as Jane in 1861 -- there is a marriage in 1858 between a John Stephenson and a Jane Lamb in Tynemouth Reg Dist.

Might Ann have died before that and John re-married?

The England 'select marriages' - show this John's father as Peter. Is that your John's father?

Hi Milliepede, JenB & Pennines,

Many thanks for your replies, very much appreciated.

Milliepede, I certainly have checked under Stevenson as an alternative spelling, never hurts to be reminded though! :) A Pilot then was a ship's pilot, a local person who navigated ships up river as he knew the area. All children had left home by 1861, just John and wife. The possible death in Newcastle is certainly one to keep on file as a possibility, thanks for that!

JenB, it is as you correctly surmised his occupation, thanks for that!

Pennines, Hmmm, I might have missed that! One of their daughters was Ann Jane Stephenson who has been known to be either Ann or Jane, and its entirely possible that I may have just possibly thought that maybe mother Ann was doing the same! That marriage in 1858 however puts a slightly different complexion on things! John's father's name is at this time unknown to me. I shall definitely have to check that marriage out!

Having had a quick look at deaths in the Tynemouth reg district between 1851 & 1861 there are two possibles.

1851 December qtr aged 22 years, therefore not her!
1857, March qtr aged 65 years. Ann would have been 61, so a possible there!

That would still leave John's death to find.

My thanks to you all again.

Kind regards

David

Hello David.

I might be on the wrong track here.

I hope you don't mind me pointing out that in the 1851 census Ann's birthplace is given as Longhurst, which was in the Parish of Bothal (near Morpeth) and not Earsdon, and her age is given as 61 i.e. born circa 1790.

There is a baptism in Bothal in 1792 of an Ann Wilson, daughter of William and Jane Wilson of Longhirst.

David I don't want to raise your hopes with that possible marriage, as no details, such as addresses or ages are known at the moment. Maybe search for a Jane Lamb -- of the same approx age as Jane Stephenson shows in 1861 --- on the  1851 census, to see if she is nearby to John and Ann.

Then see is she is still there in 1861, or has 'disappeared'!

Ag 65 in 1857 would mean born c. 1792, which fits with my reply #6 above  :-\
