Gedcom - How To Compare Files
« on: Monday 15 February 21 15:38 GMT (UK) »
Afternoon one and all,

Hoping one of you lovely people can help.

I have my own FTM created Gedcom file and I have been sent a Gedcom by someone (it's legit honest Guv).

I want to be able to compare the two files but without importing it to my own FTM file.

Is there something (free preferably) that I can import both GEDCOMs into and compare?

Thanks in advance.

The free version of RootsMagic allows you to have two trees open side by side so you can do a visual comparison.  Or you could merge the new ged with a COPY of your ftm file and read the merge report.

There's a utility called GENMatcher from Mudcreek Software which might do what you want (select it in the menu at the top):

http://www.mudcreeksoftware.com/

I haven't used it, but their GENViewer works well for me.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thanks I'll have a look at that.

Re GENMatcher: sorry it didn't help - not having used it myself I didn't realise there were limitations.

If you still need ideas it's often worth looking at Cyndi's List, though as it's a vast site some of the links can get a bit outdated:

Hey no worries ArthurUK.

Sorry if my tone seemed off ... I am still fuming about Geni .com and My Heritage

I'll give cyndis list a look tomorrow.

Thanks

Last time I used FTM was way back when FTM 2005 was the new thing but it was possible to import a file and look at it as a standalone file alongside an existing FTM file, eg, not one that is merged into an existing file or would change an existing file in any way.

I use Legacy, and it is possible to do a split screen, with one tree on one side, and another on the other.

That way it is possible to work through the import, and compare it with the original, one person at a time.

Just a thought.

In general, run each gedcom thru GEDXLATE to generate Excel compatible files.
Run Excel to compare the two, automatically.
There are a couple of minor data amendments to each prior to comparing, but I will let you work those out.
