1861 entry:

Ann Gardner 79 Boarding House (? keeper) b. Campsie
Alexr Gardner 47 joiner
Ann Gardner 40
Elizabeth Gardner 19 granddaughter, dressmaker b. Glasgow
Jas Mckinlay 32 lodger
John Reid 26 lodger
Lewes White 21 lodger

Address: 23 George St, Glasgow

Likely death for Ann Stevenson/Gardner in 1866 at the age of 85 (644/1 1849 Glasgow Central District).

Wondering about this entry in the Death & Burials OPR. No further names on the entry which might mean this Elizabeth was single and not connected?:

Elizabeth Freeland, 40, 1848. Gorbals - 02/05/1848
Ref 644/2

Wonder where young James b. 1869 was on the 1871 census?

Thanks Monica, I also think Alexander and Ann are Roberts parents. Ancestry also pointed my in their direction. Not being able to find Robert Gardner & Elizabeth Freeland's deaths in Scotland or England is like hitting my head off a brick wall.  ;D

Can't see their death either other than the one for an Elizabeth Freeland I mentioned...but there is one in 1841 that could fit that death so don't think it is her.

Grace Gardner must have died too before 1851?

It would help to find young James and mother Elizabeth in 1871 before she married in Kendal. Hopefully the certs Scotsmum mentioned for James (birth & death) will help you further.

James Freeland Gardner birth in 1869 is at 23 George Street in the city centre. Elizabeth Freeland Gardiner's occupation is warehouse worker. Child is illegitimate.

The childs death in 1874 is at 27 Wilson Street, Partick, the mother is still single. This two years after our Elizabeth Gardner got married in Kendal. Another dead end im afraid.

That is a surprise. Sort of clouds things up again a little. However, the family with son Robert in 1841 and then entries for an Elizabeth with grandmother do look promising  ;)

Ive just noticed, Its the same address the child James Freeland Gardner was born in, so its definitely not the right family. Think this is just one of those Ill have to admit defeat in  :o

Do you have her marriage record to see her address and occupation?

Was her father, Robert still living at the time of her marriage?

Not necessarily a dead end at all.   Just looked at this death certificate - the mother Elizabeth wasn't the informant, the occupier of the house where he died was.   Young James may have been left with this Sophia when Elizabeth went to England and said Sophia may have been unaware that Elizabeth had married in 1872 or if she was maybe had no details.  Note there is no occupation given for mother Elizabeth as if informant didn't know.
