how did Elizabeth Flower Veal relate to Martha Veal?
« on: Tuesday 16 February 21 14:10 GMT (UK) »
On the 1841census Thomas and Ann Carpenter have with them Edith, Martha, Mary and Elizabeth(AGE 6)Veal. I have found baptisms for all these girls the first three are daughters of Thomas and Ann or Nancy Veal  Thomas died in 1828 and Ann Veal married Thomas Carpenter 16 Jul 1833
But the baptism for Elizabeth Veal was 19 Oct 1834 Elizabeth Flower daughter of Ann Veal single woman.
Ann(Nancy) was the daughter of Thomas  Higgins and Hester(nee Flower)
Can anyone give any suggestions as to what the situation was please? Thomas and Ann VEAL married in 1818 first child Edith bap 1820
My fist thoughts were that Elizabeth was a grand daughter but Thomas and Ann Veal's Ann was not old enough to be a mother and strangely was not on that 1841 census.(daughters Ann and Mary were baptised together in 1828)

Thank you for your interest I have these baptisms ( the two baptised on Feb 3rd we done with two of their Higgins cousins ,strangley  entered one either side of the cousins) I also have the parents marriage. They were Thomas Veal and Nancy(Ann) Higgins The big mystery is why Elizabeth the daughter of the single mother was with Ann and her second husband Thomas Carpenter  in 1841 Little Elizabeth was baptised well after the second marriage so she was not the daughter of Ann Carpenter formerly Veal nee Higgins and where was she in 1851 that may give a clue to who she was ???

Mother -  Ann Veal a single women.

Still no sign of Elizabeth after 1841 but I have found this strange marriage etc. Maybe Thomas Veal & Ann were related?

Just a thought could Elizabeth actually be Ann Veal /Carpenter's daughter? 39 is not too late to have a child. The date would have to be tweated a litte, She remarried July 1833 and Elizabeth was baptised in oct 1834 but it doesnt say when she was born. If she wasnt married when Elizabeth was born? they didnt write widow.

I wondered if she was born just before the second marriage but if they waited until after the marriage why not name her Carpenter?
The Farrington Gurney register can be seen on the An..try site. The bride's father was Rueben Veal a watch and clock maker so far I can't link him to Thomas Veal
Thank you everyone

Who said it was Carpenter's baby? not mine not my name. Does the second name Flower actually nod toward the father.

But by the time of the baptism she was not a single woman ??? The Flower is an odd one as Ann ie Mrs Carpenter was the daughter of Hester Flower but there were other Flowers in the area so the jury is out it could be the father's name or in honour of her grandmother's family,   I think more likely to be the father I wonder if there is a mention in the poor law records for the parish ..that means waiting until after lock down. Most of the Veal children were baptised as newborns but the circumstances may have made Ann hesitant this time

Ann Veal bap Pensford 1.1.1815 parents John and Hester Veal

Publow 1841 census John Veal 47, Hester 50, Sabey ? 18, Elizabeth 16, Edith 14, Sophia 10, Alfred 7

Is John Veal related to Thomas Veal, that would perhaps make Elizabeth a neice. have found nothing as yet to back this up.
