Hi,

Think the clue to this is John Diddle, we see him in the 1851 Census with his Father Mathew but the family name is recorded ad Didwell.
We know who and when Mathew married per previous posts and what happened to his other children all with the surname Diddle.

John Diddle, prior to his marriage in 1846 to Sarah Darkins as John Didwell, is on the 1841 Census as John Diddle aged 2O (because of rounding down in this census is actually aged between 20-24)
Male servant
HO/107/770/10 Sch 80 pg 8. His future wife is on Sch. 18 pg 14 Walpole St. Peter.

Think the question is why did John change his name? Which appears to have occurred between June 1841 and his marriage 1846, he also choses to alter his fathers name in 1851 census however his fathers death is recorded as Diddle.

Just to point out that I do not think there was any actual name change re. Diddle to Didwell (or vice versa).   Clerics at the time would just write down what the name sounded like to them, most ordinary folk being illiterate at the time.

Thanks again everyone for taking a look, I must admit my head is spinning lol! and I might have to print EVERYTHING as it might be clearer with paper in front of me.

I agree name changes could be due to accents, or miss spelling by clerics.

I have got the England, Select Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991 records FHL Film Number1040591 showing Mathew as Didwell died 1853

Also John Didwell's baptism on the Norfolk transcripts showing his parents as Mathew and Mary Didwell and not Diddle

So I don't think John changed the name, and chant see why Mathew would change from Diddle to didwell himself unless it was miss typed by a cleric?

However I've also just found FHL Film Number:   1040559 baptism 1750 for Mathew Diddle which is more than 30yrs before Mathew Didwell's birth (going by census date) ...so this does now make me think they might not be the same person

Does that sound correct?

Trish, I'm not sure, I understand what you mean:

Marriage;
02 Jun 1846, St Mary Magdalene, Fleet, Lincolnshire*
George HALLIFAX, Bachelor, Sull Age, Fatmer, Father EDMUND a Farmer
Jane DIDWELL, Spinster, Full Age, Servant, Father MATTHEW a Labourer
Witnesses, Sarah HERBERT/John JEALOUS

I do have Sarah Herbert as married to John Didwell, not sure who is John jealous?

Hi Ddidyman.

Sorry if I confused you but this is what threw me on Spendloves earlier posting;;

Quote;
"John Diddle, prior to his marriage in 1846 to Sarah Darkins as John Didwell."

I had Sarah as nee Herbert and thats why I posted the Bapt for Samuel Didwell mmn Herbert.

I thought this Sarah Herbert may be the marriage witness to Jane Didwell earlier in the year.

John Jealous the other witness may just be a friend
