Margaret Hill's whereabouts ?
« on: Wednesday 17 February 21 10:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Wonder if anyone can help.

I'm trying to trace the whereabouts of James Hill (b. 1833, alive 1841 census), eldest son, and Margaret Hill (b. 1842, alive 1861 census), 3rd daughter of Robert Hill, Grocer and Tea / Spirit Dealer of Milnes Court, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh (1808 - 1874), and his wife Margaret Allan (1802 - 1847). They married at Ratho 1830.

I know the whereabouts of all their other children apart James and Margaret. All the children were born at Milnes Court. Jane (b. 1831, m. 1854 Alexander Campbell, a mason), James (b. 1831, d. ?), Wilhelmina (1837-1912 unm), Robert (1839 - 1922, married twice, 2 daus) and Elizabeth (1846 - 1923 unm).

There is a gravestone in the Grange Cemetery, Edinburgh which mentions Robert, wife Margaret, Wilhelmina and Elizabeth. There is a stone next to it of exactly the same design to a Lawrence G. Anderson but I have been unable to find a link.

If anyone can help I'd be very grateful.

Hi Ev and Rosie,

So sorry in the delay getting back to you. Was out on my daily "Covid" walk from Edinburgh to Musselburgh and back and have just returned.
Many thanks both for the attached info. Great stuff. I've done most of my family history over the years and have just retired recently, so revisiting the gaps and thought I'd give Rootschat a go again to see if anyone could help me. Can't believe you've both helped me in such a short period. Just reinforces what a great resource Rootschat is!

I had thought that James might have died young by 1841 but he obviously joined the Merchant navy and moved down to London.
I searched for Margaret's marriage and /or death a while ago but came up with nothing, but now she moved to Australia I can try to find out more on their records.

Many, many thanks to both of you.

Craig
