Betty Perkins d 1816 mourning ring
« on: Wednesday 17 February 21 14:10 GMT (UK) »
I have a mourning ring of hair surrounded by black stones which is inscribed Betty Perkins Ob 29 July 1816 and then something I can't quite read but includes 24. I have tried to find Betty Perkins on Ancestry but not having much success. She may have been married to William Perkins of Trowbridge, Wiltshire, but I am not sure. Can anyone point me in the right direction please.
The ring was acquired from a jumble sale about 40 years ago. It would be nice to find the family it belongs to.
Thanks

Hello Eastney,

The bit that you can't quite read - could it be "ae 24" meaning she died aged 24?
(ae or sometimes aet often used as abbreviation for aetat , the Latin for "at the age of")

Cheers,
Westoe

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

There is a burial record for a Betty Perkins in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.  Denomination is Independent.

Buried on 29th July 1816 and spouse is given as William.  No age mentioned.

As Westoe has suggested her age was probably 24, so born around 1792.

There are a few baptisms for Betty Read.

Elizabeth Read age 19, born 1792
Baptised on 11 Aug 1811 at Trowbridge, St. James

Parents are George and Sarah

There are another three for the same name and parents but aged 17 and born 1794.

The first one is the best option going by her age when she died.  If this is the right one, she was baptised 10 months before she married.

Thanks to Westoe, Girl Guide and Mckha489 for your very helpful information. I should now be able to find a descendant on Ancestry.
