LizzieL, if you have a scroll wheel on your mouse, try using that as it'll likely zoom in finer steps.

EDIT: The same should apply for laptop trackpad scrolling.

Can't scroll with trackpad, all I can do is click on + and - buttons. Rather an old laptop

Curiosity got the better of me, for the image viewer they're using OpenSeadragon, an open source javascript library.

FindMyPast seem to be using OpenSeadragon's default zoom options, which for clicks is 2.0 (ie 100%) and scroll is 1.2 (ie 20%).

You can test this by zooming out to the maximum level (40%), then zooming in using either your mouse/trackpad scroll or the zoom control buttons.

It is possible, using the developer tools in web browsers, to change these zoom options but that's not a practical solution for users. Changing the zoom levels would be a trivial change for FindMyPast and hopefully they make this change (for the zoom control buttons), as 100% is clearly too much. If they don't though I'll write a custom bit of javascript to give users more control.

FindMyPast is currently giving me a "down for maintenance" message.  Perhaps they listened to the feedback?

I was on my laptop last night when I spotted the change. I'm now on one of my  desktops - a Mac with Safari and Firefox - and the images aren't at all as cramped. It's also the same on my Windows 10 with Firefox desktop machine.

If FindMyPast were able to introduce the options that they have for tablets and smartphones on laptops, I think it would satisfy me. It's not as it was but I could live with it.

I discovered this change earlier today. I can't see the point of the images at the bottom of the screen. I can click on them to move to the next page, but it is no quicker or easier than using the arrow which has always been there.
I can still zoom in and out with the mouse on my elderly laptop, which I think someone could not do.

I'm using trackpad not a mouse. Looks like I need to buy a mouse

It depends how you research, if you are looking at baptisms and are looking for all children in a family it is useful to be able to jump to the next year using the film strip rather than multiple clicks on the right arrow. This way also avoids transcription errors that using the text search method involves.

I've only looked at censuses since the change. I primarily want to look at single families, not everyone in the street or town. As some of the families are large I cannot see all members at all one go through this new "letterbox", so I have to scroll down, sometimes more than once.
