Newington Sessions 1899 Look Up Please
« on: Thursday 18 February 21 10:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Could anyone please help me with a look up, i have a descendant who was convicted of fraud at the Newington Sessions on 14th June 1899, he was given 3 years for obtaining and five years for Bigamy, to run consecutively. I wonder if anyone could provide me with any further information and where he might be imprisioned? He's a bit of a wrongan as he's back in prison in 1904 & again in 1911?
I am unable to locate him in the 1901 census, he must be in prison somewhere. He unfortunatley uses several Alias names?
The name he appears to go under the most is George Stanley Crawley born 1869 Walworth,Newington Essex.
His birth name is George Sowden Dille(i)more. He also uses the surnames of Snowden / Dixon/ Brooks/ Hargreaves/ Beresford / Curtis.
When he married his first wife he was George Sowden Dillimore, When he married his bigamy wife he was Stanley Curtis.
I know this is a big ask but after 1924 when theres a wanted article for him in the London Gazette he's disappeared? the wanted article says he's living in South Benfleet.
Any Help would be very much appreciated. Jackie

In June 1899 he was convicted as George Dixon Hargreaves and sentenced to 18 months according to this record: https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=TNA%2FCCC%2FHO140%2F234%2F00171&parentid=TNA%2FCCC%2F2B%2FHO140%2F00407067

Shaun,

Thankyou so much your help is very much appreciated? Unfortunatley i don't have a subscription at the moment to Find my past so i can't see the record itself. But will make a note  and access it as soon as i can. I will look to see if thats the name he's down as in the 1901 census?

Thanks again you are a STAR!!!

In case you haven't seen them there are several newspaper reports in November/December 1911 detailing his criminal past following a court case in Maidstone:
"AMAZING RECORD OF DECEPTION"
"BIGAMIST'S CAREER OF CRIME"
"MANY TIMES MARRIED - AMAZING RECORD OF DECEPTION"
"CAREER OF FRAUD AND BIGAMY"
"HEARTLESS CRIMINAL" etc

It even made the news in USA and Australia.

Shaun,

Wow! This is amazing! I haven't got any of these newspapers, i will add them to my list to look at, thank you.  Could i ask what name is he being referred to in these newspapers? His court details at this time were in the name George Staley Crawley.
Thanks so much for your help

Some of those stories are also available through British Newspaper Archive website.  In 1904 he was described as an "incorrigible rogue" in the Irish News.  West Somerset Free press reported "Widow's Lost Wealth".  I can't see anything after 1911
